Aesthetics of Chemical Products Materials , Molecules , and Molecular Models

چکیده

By comparing chemistry to art, chemists have recently made claims to the aesthetic value, even beauty, of some of their products. This paper takes these claims seriously and turns them into a systematic investigation of the aesthetics of chemical products. I distinguish three types of chemical products – materials, molecules, and molecular models – and use a wide variety of aesthetic theories suitable for an investigation of the corresponding sorts of objects. These include aesthetics of materials, idealistic aesthetics from Plato to Kant and Schopenhauer, psychological approaches of Ernst Gombrich and Rudolf Arnheim, and semiotic aesthetics of Nelson Goodman and Umberto Eco. Although the investigation does not support recent claims, I point out where aesthetics does and can play an import role in chemistry. Particularly, Eco’s approach helps us understand that and how aesthetic experience can be a driving force in chemical research.

QSAR models to predict physico-chemical Properties of some barbiturate derivatives using molecular descriptors and genetic algorithm- multiple linear regressions

In this study the relationship between choosing appropriate descriptors by genetic algorithm to the Polarizability (POL), Molar Refractivity (MR) and Octanol/water Partition Coefficient (LogP) of barbiturates is studied. The chemical structures of the molecules were optimized using ab initio 6-31G basis set method and Polak-Ribiere algorithm with conjugated gradient within HyperChem 8.0 environ...

Theoretical investigations on molecular structure, NBO, HOMO-LUMO and MEP analysis of two crystal structures of N-(2-benzoyl-phenyl) oxalyl: A DFT study

The N-(2-benzoyl-phenyl) oxalyl derivatives are important models for studying of three-centered intramolecular hydrogen bonding in organic molecules. The quantum theoretical calculations for two crystal structures of N-(2-benzoyl-phenyl) oxalyl (compounds I and II) were performed by Density Functional Theory (B3LYP method and 6-311+G* basis set). From the optimized structures, geometric paramet...

Investigation of the Molecules Obtained from Marijuana: Computational Study of Spectral, Structural and Docking

There are many chemical molecules whose names are Cannabigerol (CBG), cannabidol (CBD), cannabichromene (CBC), tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV), cannabigerovarinic acid (CBGV) and cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) derived from Marijuana. Theoretical methods were used to compare the chemical and biological activities of the six major molecules. Molecules were compared with their chemical activities using m...

Molecular Aesthetics: Blind Alleys and Fertile Soils

1. Introduction Since the advent of synthetic organic chemistry in the mid-19th century, chemists have frequently pointed out the creativity, imagination, and aesthetic inspiration required for chemical synthesis (Root-Bernstein 2003, Jacobs 2006, chaps. III.4-5). Most famously Marcelin Berthelot (1860) compared the chemo-synthetic work to that of the 'arts' because, like artists and unlike oth...

مروری بر توصیف‌کننده‌های مولکولی مواد پرانرژی در مدل‌های ارائه شده برمبنای QSAR/QSPR

Abstract: Recognition of the molecular structures is the key point in understanding the performance of molecules; this is because of the existence relation between the structure and properties of a compound which links its microscopic and macroscopic to each other. The laboratory works usually are time consuming and expensive. QSPR is a method which help us to achieve the favoured data and info...
